THE
ECUADORIAN RAIN FOREST
The Ecuadorian Amazon Rainforest covers 130.035 sq. km more than 48%
of the country. It is scarcely inhabited, about 390.000 people.
Scientists consider the Amazon Rainforest as one of
the 25 high-priority areas to be protected for the survival of Earth.
The Ecuadorian Amazon Basin harbours one the highest

home for many plants, birds, amphibians, reptiles and insects.
WE INVITE YOU TO COME AND SHARE THIS ADVENTURE
WITHIN AN ECOLOGICAL PROJECT CALLED “AMAZON CABAÑAS SHIRIPUNO” RIGHT IN
THE HEART OF THE ECUADORIAN AMAZON RAIN FOREST!!!
THE SHIRIPUNO RIVER
The lowlands rainforest is the most sophisticated and complex
ecosystem on Earth. It takes time, patience and a solid background
to approach and penetrate this environment and its various aspects.
Nowhere else could the wildlife be so magnificent and mysterious that in
the depth of the Shiripuno River rainforest, a natural observation
place, huge trees covered with epiphytes and hanging vines, where the
sun hardly breaks through the dense foliage, salt licks, oxbow lakes and
meander streams full of fish schools;
the
enormous canopy hosts the rare harpy eagle and the magnificent scarlet
macaw. Muddy trails left by tapir peccaries and then fresh jaguar
tracks, noisy giant otters frolicking in the rivers searching fish,
anacondas and caimans basking by the river shores. Metallic blue
butterflies break the monotony of the shadowy forest with their striking
colors and behaviour. The whistle of a great tinamou signals the nigh to
come and then chorus of tree frogs perform as snakes of different
species move around while myriads of katydids enjoy fresh leaves and
Life starts again…
THE HUAORANI ANTHROPOLOGICAL RESERVE
The Huaorani Reserve is located in the Upper Amazon though below 300
meters occupying the Provinces of Orellana, Napo, Pastaza, they are
eighteen different communities living on the Reserve.
The Huaorani people are
renowned for their great hunting skills and a deep knowledge of the
rainforest. One of their traditional weapons is the 2 meter-long spear
they use as a harpoon to hunt peccaries and other big animals. Another
one is the blowpipe and the famous poison“curare”-laced darts. Thanks to
their diet and constant exercise they enjoy an excellent physical
condition. Older people have a hole in their earlobe where they insert a
disc made of balsa wood. Animals are always present in Huaorani houses
as pets, such as monkeys, parrots, peccaries and others. These people
still rely on the forest resources for their survival.
